Typical Feed and Return Configurations for Connecting Solar Panels to Existing Pool Equipment
Below are four typical ways a solar pool heating system can be connected to existing pool equipment. The correct layout depends on the location of the feed and return plumbing and the required three-way valve rotation.

Your system may use a different filter or include additional equipment such as a chlorinator, automatic pool cleaner, heat pump or gas heater. However, the basic solar feed, return, check-valve and three-way-valve arrangement should be similar to one of the layouts shown below.

The first check valve is installed after the filter. It helps prevent water draining from the solar collectors from flowing backward through the filter when the pool pump shuts off. The three-way valve directs filtered water either to the solar collectors or directly back to the pool. A check valve on the solar return line prevents reverse flow through the collectors when solar heating is turned off.
